THE BLUE MOON HISTORY / The Blue Moon is the oldest gift shop in Humboldt County. Opening on April Fool’s day of 1978 in Miranda, it moved to it’s current location in Garberville in 1985.  Bunny, the store’s founder, sold the store Kathy Hapgood in 2001, but stayed on as a manager. In 2015, current owners Dee & Matt Nelson bought the store and continue the tradition of bringing fabulous, fun gifts to Southern Humboldt. The Blue Moon is filled with beautiful lamps and art, games and puzzles, toys and novelties. Customers who shopped at the original location continue to patronize the store. Families that have moved out of the area still return with their children and grandchildren. Locals continue to buy balloons and presents for birthdays and treat themselves to treasures like jewelry or a leather-bound journal. Children still come in with pocket change and leave with a trinket and a smile on their face. Customers remark they could spend all day perusing and still not see everything!
